jon kyl says the gop needs details from the president before shaking hands. >> i'm a little frustrated. you heard it in the press conference of the president. you heard it today from the administration spokesman. they're never willing to be specific about the reductions in spending that they would be willing to do. >> the debt ceiling, possible default, and washington rhetoric are a little too wongy to get excited about, no one knows exactly what will happen if we don't raise the debt ceiling. we talked to alan blinder, former vice chairman of the federal reserve. he says government payments could be slower to come out if they come out at all. interest rates could rise. some of the experts we talked to said the u.s. could, could, get pushed back into a recession. >>> looks like microsoft may be getting into the social networking game. a reporter happened upon the welcome page for tulalip. it was taken down. now it says it was an internal design page mistakenly published to the web. >>> not everything is friendly in the social media world. app developer michael johnson was looking for a
politicians. if he were here today he could be with jon stewart, he could be anybody, he uld be with stephen colbert and meet them eye to eye. that he was funny. how often have w seen a polician like that? not in a long time. >> rose: how do you think president obama's doing on those standards? >> well, i think the one thing he did care about, lincoln, originally, the emotional intelligence set of issues, i think he does have those. when you watch him around a table he makes sure everybody speaks, h listens to people with opposing advice. i think the thing you ve to learn when you get into the presidency is that a certain point you can't listen anymore. lincoln finally said "consensus can be paralyzing, you have to decide when to act." >> rose: wow. >> so that everyone around a table, for example, he debated emancipation for two months, three months, and everybody had different points of view. don't do it, do it, do it yesterday. he finally decided i'm making my mind up and issuing the emancipation proclamation. he goes to the cabinet and says "i don't want your ideas. i've made up my mind.

and social security in return for republicans accepting major changes in the tax code. abc's jon karl joins us from washington. all talks secret up until now. what more do we know about what president obama and the speaker of the house have been discussing? >> reporter: we know they're talking about a big deal here, george. as you mentioned, this would mean that the president would go along with reductions in spending to social security and medicare. most likely cost of living increases going down. and in exchange, republicans would accept some increase in tax revenues as part of an overhaul of the tax code. as one top administration told me, we need to do something unthinkable on entitlements. they need to do something unthinkable on taxes. >> unthinkable may be the word. these talks have been going on between the president and speaker boehner. but there hasn't been a lot of discussion among the wider conferences in the house and the senate democrats and republicans. and i guess the big question coming out of today's meeting, when other leaders find out about it, is it something they can w
